Patient Care Technician

About the role

The University of Rochester seeks a dedicated Patient Care Technician to support the Short Stay Unit at Strong Memorial Hospital. Working under the direction of a licensed nurse, you will provide basic and specialized patient care, ensuring comfort, safety, and well‑being.

Key responsibilities

• Perform basic and specialized physical and psychosocial interventions as defined by the Patient Care Technician Skill Inventory.
• Collect and record specimens and body fluids, and send them to the laboratory per hospital policy.
• Conduct technical procedures such as venipuncture, EKG acquisition, electrode placement, and telemetry readings, reporting findings to nursing staff.
• Document patient data on appropriate flow sheets and assist with quality‑assurance activities.
• Provide environmental comfort measures and orient patients/families to the unit, including distribution of the Patients' Bill of Rights.
• Support unit functioning by performing additional duties assigned by the supervising nurse.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Two years of health‑care experience (e.g., Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide, EMT) or two clinical semesters as a nursing student, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required skills

• Venipuncture for blood sample collection.
• Electrocardiogram (EKG) acquisition and interpretation.
• Telemetry monitoring and electrode placement.
• Specimen collection and basic laboratory testing.
• Proficiency with technical and mechanical apparatus, measuring devices, and office equipment used in a clinical setting.
