About the role

EJF is looking for an Africa Regional Coordinator to support the Africa component of its EU-funded project, the Global Toolkit for Participatory Fisheries Governance, which trains and empowers small-scale fishing communities against IUU fishing in 15 countries. The role is full-time and based in the EJF office in either Cape Coast, Ghana or Dakar, Senegal, with regular local, national and international travel. It reports to the Programme Coordinator and the Country Manager / West Africa Regional Manager.

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee in-country implementation of the project's African component and coordinate training workshops and activities for in-country teams.
  • Organise and lead scoping missions to build relations with national authorities and identify small-scale fishing communities.
  • Deliver training workshops (in-person and virtual) on participatory fisheries governance, the DASE app, co-management, IUU fishing and the VGGT principles.
  • Hold regular coordination calls with in-country teams and provide remote support and strategic guidance.
  • Support the advertising, contracting and mentoring of consultants and partners in countries where EJF has no presence.
  • Review and create training and guidance materials adapted to each country context.
  • Build partnerships with government and civil society groups, represent the project externally and support communications.
  • Develop impact tracking tools, support donor reporting and oversee budgets, subgrants and contracts.

Required profile

  • Demonstrable professional experience in project management or coordination, ideally in an NGO or international development organisation working in fisheries, oceans or the environment.
  • University degree in a relevant discipline such as environment, international development, project management or social sciences.
  • At least 3 years' experience delivering development projects, preferably across several countries, within budget.
  • Experience working with small-scale fishing communities and grassroots organisations.
  • Fluency in English and French, tested at interview.

Required skills

  • Public speaking and experience delivering workshops or trainings.
  • Building relationships with government and civil society stakeholders.
  • Building detailed project budgets in Excel and tracking expenditure.

What we offer
