Human Rights Officer – West Africa Regional Office

About the role

The Human Rights Officer will be based in the West Africa Regional Office in Dakar, supporting the Regional Representative in promoting and protecting human rights across the region. This position involves a mix of monitoring, analysis, reporting, and advisory tasks within the United Nations system.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and investigate compliance with international human rights and humanitarian law.
• Analyze and manage data to inform early‑warning mechanisms, accountability processes and policy development.
• Draft evidence‑based reports, strategic advice and recommendations for UN leadership and national authorities.
• Integrate human‑rights perspectives into peace, humanitarian and development planning.
• Advise on protection of civilians, rule of law and transitional justice issues.
• Foster partnerships, capacity‑building initiatives and advocacy efforts to advance equality and accountability.

Required profile

• Strong background in international human rights and humanitarian law.
• Experience in monitoring, reporting and advocacy related to human‑rights issues.
• Ability to work closely with senior UN officials and national authorities.
