Senior Underground HSE Officer

About the role

The Senior Underground HSE Officer reports to the Underground Safety Superintendent and leads the implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of health, safety and environmental programmes within underground mining operations. The role works closely with operations and contractor teams to ensure safe execution of development and production activities while fostering a strong safety culture.

Key responsibilities

• Provide visible HSE leadership, coaching and conduct regular underground inspections and audits.
• Facilitate hazard identification, risk assessments and control implementation for high‑risk activities such as ground control, confined spaces, explosives handling, ventilation and electrical safety.
• Lead incident and near‑miss investigations, apply root‑cause analysis and oversee corrective action plans.
• Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, environmental regulations and internal standards; support internal and external audits.
• Deliver specialised underground safety training, coordinate emergency response drills and verify competency of employees and contractors.
• Monitor HSE performance indicators, prepare regular reports and develop action plans to address trends.

Required profile

• Significant experience in HSE roles within underground mining or similar high‑risk environments.
• Strong knowledge of mining safety regulations, risk management and incident investigation methodologies.
• Proven ability to lead teams, influence contractors and drive a proactive safety culture.
• Excellent communication and reporting skills.
