Volunteer Board Development and Governance Expert (Remote)

About the role

Ashoka is assembling an elite international team of senior board development and governance experts to advise its Fellows as they build and scale their social‑impact organisations. This unpaid, volunteer position works directly with Ashoka staff and provides strategic guidance on board matters.

Key responsibilities

• Provide governance advice and fiduciary oversight to Ashoka Fellows.
• Support board assessment, recruitment, succession planning and policy development.
• Apply strategic thinking and political judgement to guide board decisions.
• Facilitate influence without authority and foster inclusive recruitment.
• Produce high‑quality written communications for board materials.
• Utilise financial and risk literacy to evaluate board proposals.
• Maintain discretion and integrity in handling confidential governance matters.
• Leverage data and process expertise to turn governance into a management discipline.

Required profile

• Seven to ten years of relevant experience, including at least three years supporting boards or governance committees.
• Demonstrated experience in board assessment, recruitment/succession, and charter development.
• Strong executive‑level writing and referenceable advisory experience.
