Health Unit Coordinator – Emergency Department

About the role

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) provides essential clerical and secretarial support to the Emergency Department nursing team. Working on a day shift, the HUC ensures smooth patient flow, accurate documentation, and timely communication between clinical staff and ancillary services.

Key responsibilities

• Perform admission, discharge, transfer, and death paperwork.
• Notify licensed nursing personnel of STAT orders and transcribe physician orders promptly.
• Requisition supplies, maintain equipment inventories, and prepare related forms.
• Answer telephone and intercom calls, relay messages, and document communications.
• Schedule patient tests, diagnostic procedures, and physician appointments.
• Organize patient charts, label forms, and obtain records from external facilities.
• Manage patient flow using the flowboard and ensure appropriate discharge disposition in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
• Assist physicians in obtaining lab, radiology, and other reports.
• Follow hospital policies, complete annual education assignments, and participate in quality‑improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast‑paced emergency environment.
• Excellent communication skills for interacting with staff, patients, and external providers.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.

Required skills

• Electronic Medical Records (EMR) proficiency.
