Communication Officer

About the role

Tostan, a non-profit based in Dakar and active in five West African countries, is recruiting a Communication Officer in Thiès, Senegal. The officer reports to the Head of Communications and coordinates closely with the Senior Programme Manager. The role turns field evidence into stories, public narratives and policy arguments, amplifying the voices of young women and community actors rather than speaking in their place.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and run field missions to partner communities, documenting change through interviews, written stories, photography and short video, and work with young women, community leaders, local authorities and producer groups.
• Turn monitoring data and evaluation findings into impact stories and case studies, and co-draft donor narrative reports with the MEL and programme teams.
• Contribute to documentary films, produce local-language safeguarding materials, and support the training and mentoring of young women community storytellers.
• Maintain a well-catalogued multimedia library with documented consent for every image, recording and quote.
• Produce regular content for social media, newsletters and websites in French and English, and feed the programme's online knowledge platform and impact dashboard.
• Run digital campaigns around programme milestones and international days, track digital performance and apply co-branding and attribution guidelines.
• Contribute to policy briefs and thematic reports, support the annual learning and advocacy forum, and prepare briefing notes and talking points for policy dialogues.
• Build relationships with journalists and editors, support journalist fellows, draft press releases and media advisories, organise press trips and apply the media engagement protocol.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Communications, or a master's degree or similar advanced degree preferred.
• More than five years of communications experience.
• Experience in a development context and/or a social sector organisation.
• High levels of English and French as a minimum; Wolof or Portuguese is an advantage.

Required skills

• Building relationships in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
• Expertise producing websites, online communities, videos, webinars, infographics and other multimedia content.
• Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
• Ability to use and lead others on project and content management systems, social media tools and search engine optimisation.
