Regional Protection Officer – West & Central Africa

About the role

The Regional Protection Officer (P) will support the Protection (MPX) Unit of IOM’s Regional Office for West and Central Africa. The role provides thematic oversight and technical assistance for protection, assisted voluntary return and reintegration programmes, ensuring beneficiaries receive safe, dignified services such as protection screening, counselling and travel‑document acquisition.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical guidance and oversight for protection, return and reintegration activities across the West and Central Africa region.
• Coordinate with IOM Headquarters, the Global Office in Washington, D.C., and country offices to ensure consistent implementation of protection standards.
• Conduct protection screenings, offer counselling, and facilitate the issuance of travel documents for assisted voluntary return.
• Monitor and report on programme performance, identifying gaps and recommending improvements.
• Collaborate with governmental, intergovernmental and non‑governmental partners to promote humane and orderly migration.

Required profile

• Relevant academic background in migration, humanitarian protection, international relations or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience in protection services, assisted voluntary return or reintegration programmes.
• Strong understanding of migration policies and protection frameworks.
• Excellent communication and coordination skills with diverse stakeholders.
