Land Cover and GIS Expert

About the role

The FAO Sub-Regional Office for West Africa is seeking a Land Cover and GIS Expert to support the TCP/SFW/4008 project, which aims to strengthen regional capacities for sustainable land monitoring. The incumbent will work under the FAO Representative and the Assistant‑FAOR Programme, providing technical expertise in GIS and remote sensing for activities primarily in Senegal.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in coordinating regional land‑cover and land‑use activities under the TCP/SFW/4008 project.
• Provide technical support and knowledge sharing in GIS and remote sensing, under guidance from an international land‑monitoring expert.
• Organise and implement project activities, including regional expert meetings, workshops, and field data collection with service providers.
• Ensure proper documentation, archiving, and reporting of all technical and project‑related information.
• Support the international consultant in conducting need and gap assessments on land cover and land use, gathering existing datasets and liaising with national partners.
• Facilitate regular meetings with consultants and stakeholders to develop technical networks and promote awareness of land‑cover issues.

Required profile

• Relevant academic background in geography, environmental science, GIS, remote sensing or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience in land‑cover/land‑use mapping and regional project coordination.
• Ability to work collaboratively with national and regional partners and to communicate technical information effectively.
